The house is amply buffered from the street by plentiful hedgerows and trees.

How is the birding on the property?

Tree Haven is located in the north south flyway, along a rather unique section of the Delaware Bay coastline. We have chosen to protect the natural habitat on the property, whether it be our ponds, our marshes, the woods, or the dune and bay beach.  Our property consistently rates in the top 10 on Ebirds during bird migration time. The entire property is perfect for birding.  In addition, it's always a treat to come across a raccoon family, a flock of wild turkeys, deer, turtles of all sorts, etc., as we walk down to the Bay. And, of course, there are the horseshoe crabs who arrive on the Bay beach during spawning season, and other marine life.

Is there an Audubon Center nearby?

An excellent Audubon Center and branch of the Cape May Bird Observatory is about 5 miles north of us on State Highway Route 47 between South Dennis and Goshen.

Is the kitchen well equipped?

The large eat-in kitchen is equipped with the usual appliances. There is a double bowled sink, a dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster, and microwave, as well as a range and refrigerator.

The kitchen is stocked with dishes, pots and pans, and cutlery.

Are there laundry facilities?

A full sized washer and dryer are in a laundry room that adjoins the kitchen.

What are the bathing facilities?

The 1st floor bathroom contains a large shower, toilet and sink. The 2nd floor bathroom is large enough to accommodate a stall shower as well as a separate ball claw foot tub, toilet and sink. There is also an enclosed outside shower behind the house, very handy for washing away the sand after a day at the beach!

Which is the nearest protected beach?

The nearest ocean beach communities are North Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Cape May, and Cape May Point. Most of these beaches offer lifeguard protection. Most of these beaches require beach tags which are available for purchase in each community. They are located within a 15 (+/-) minute drive from the house.

Is there beach protection for swimmers in the Delaware Bay along the west end of Tree Haven?

Although the Delaware Bay beaches in New Jersey are open to the public, there are no life guards. Every once in a while we have noticed someone swimming in the Bay. Swimmers do so entirely at their own risk. The floor of the bay gradually slopes out from the shore. At low tide there are alternating ribbons of sandbars and water way out from the shore line. You can see this in the photo at the right. The bay beach is great to explore and sight birds.

How far is the nearest shopping area from Delaware Bay Country House?

Within one mile of the house there is an excellent garden center/farmer's market, a great fresh fish market/ tackle store, and a nice little roadside restaurant. The nearest convenience store, Pantry One, is approximately 3 miles north of the property. The major supermarkets, etc. are within a 10 minute drive in either the Rio Grande area, or Cape May Court House.

The best prices for gasoline are in Rio Grande.

Is there cable television and internet access?

The house is equipped with wifi for internet access, as well as basic cable TV.

Is there air conditioning and heat?

The house is equipped with both.

Is the beach down at the bay end of the property accessible all year around?

During the past few years the State of New Jersey has imposed restrictions on beach access during the migratory period for the Red Knot. During a period of approximately one month, that encompasses part of May and the beginning of June, no one may walk on the Delaware Bay beach. We assume this restriction will apply to each season. One can stand on the dune to bird watch, without stepping onto the sand. We will have that information available, if you inquire about that short time period.

Are there good places to walk?

There is a nice long walk along our private road, Gus’s Beach Road, that leads from the house to the bay beach. There is also a beautiful long walk south on the bay beach itself. South of us are just a few other homes and the oyster research facility run by Rutgers, then nothing but the woods on the left and the bay on the right for quite a nice long distance. This walk is lovely at all times of year and times of day. The sun sets over the Bay.

How far is Delaware Bay Country House from the Cape May-Lewes Ferry?

A fifteen minute drive. And that's a great ferry ride, if you've never taken it!

Why do your rates vacillate throughout the year?

Cape May County is a resort area. We happen to love it at any time of year, so we offer both residences on Tree Haven to visiting guests during all four seasons. We like to reduce our rates in the off-season in order to encourage visitors to this incredibly beautiful area. We only rent the houses out for weekends and weeks because we and our family use it ourselves every chance we get. A year round constant renter would not afford us that opportunity.

What is it like in the winter?

That varies. There can be sunny clear cold days, there can be very windy days, etc.. One of the most beautiful times of year is when the frosty feathery tips of the phragmites glitter in the sunlight and the rising or setting sun blankets the partially frozen bay in a subtle glow.

Is there privacy at Delaware Bay Country House?

Yes. Although the house is located at the road end of the Tree Haven property, it is well hidden from the road by trees and vegetation.

Are there nice things for children to do in Cape May County, and at Delaware Bay Country house, besides going to the beach?

There is a great large tree with swings in the garden, a little clapboard play house for small children to explore and a large lawn to play in. Within a short driving distance from the house one can take the children to the famous boardwalk in Wildwood. Miniature golf, the arcades, etc. can be found in Cape May as well as Stone Harbor. There's a multiplex movie theater and a miniature golf course in Rio Grande, just 10 minutes away. A very nice large zoo is situated in Cape May Court House, and an excellent library. The Wetlands Institute on the road to Stone Harbor is a few minutes away. Leaming's Run Gardens is located in Swainton, also a short drive away. Cape May is a lovely town for young and old - full of beautifully restored Victorian houses, good restaurants, shops, tours, boat rides, music and theater festivals etc.. Stone Harbor is a classic shore town with lots to offer.
